About us

Welcome to Piriven and Bhikkhu Education

The Tripitaka literature states that the word Pirivena has been used since the time of the Buddha to refer to the monastery or hut where the monks lived. Pirivena is a traditional educational institution that has been operating in Sri Lanka for centuries. Vyakta, Visharada, Bahusratha, Dharmadhara and Vinayadhara Bhikkus were created who brought fame to this country through Pirivena education. The main function of the Pirivena was to teach and teach classical subjects such as Sinhala, Pali, Sanskrit as well as subjects such as Buddhism, History, Elegance, Astrology and Logic. It happened through Pirivena education. It was through the Pirivenas that the exemplary Bhikku leadership was trained in the society by practicing the disciplinary disciplines imposed by the Lord Buddha.

BC The Kalaprasada Monastery, built by King Devanampiyatissa in the first century, is considered to be the first Pirivena in Sri Lanka. The Maha Viharaya and the Abhayagiri are two of the most prestigious educational institutions in the country. Eight Pirivena Educational Centers, formerly known as the Headquarters, are located in Metara and are known as the Eight Headquarters. Welivita Asarana Sarana Saranankara Sangharaja Thero, who pioneered the continuation of Pirivena education to this day, can be proudly named as the founder of the present day Pirivena education revival in the country.

Pirivena, which was under autonomy in the past, has become a state institution functioning under the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Sri Lanka since the colonial era. Today, there are about 825 government-approved pirivenas operating islandwide, with more than 69,000 lay clergy students and more than 7,300 lay clergy teachers engaged in the teaching and learning process. There are several types of Pirivenas operating in the Pirivena system such as Basic Pirivenas, Maha Pirivenas, Pirivena Colleges, Bilingual Pirivenas, Special Pirivenas and Buddhist Seelamatha Educational Institutions. Throughout history, the training of monks has been the main objective of Pirivena education, but now the Pirivena also provides education to lay boys. ”

Blessings of the National Pirivena Instructor Thero

The present day Pirivena education can be termed as a result of the evolution of the Sri Lankan Buddhist education established with the arrival of Mihindagamanaya with the focus on monasteries. The main objective of Pirivena-based Aramaic education is to build a community of lay clergy students who work for the betterment of the threefold Sasana of Pariyatti, Patipatti and Pativeda. In the face of current global trends, distance education using technology and equipment is becoming more and more important than the teacher-student learning process. It should often be management based on learning outcomes and being a student center is a key requirement. There is an urgent need to store the knowledge and information required for Pirivena education and to preserve and update it so that it can be utilized when required. Working through internet technology is an essential factor in overcoming all the challenges to conquer the world of the future. Accordingly, creating a website for Pirivena education is a virtuous act. It is our sincere hope that the entire Pirivena community will be able to reap the benefits of success here.

Message from the Director Thero of Pirivena Education

Sri Lankans inherited education with the arrival of Mahindagamanaya. Buddhist education based on the Trinity is the oldest method of education. That educational ideal is inherited by a generation of teachers and students. The Pirivena also begins with the same education. Aramaic education which started from the Anuradhapura era was called Pirivena education. The prestige of the Buddha Sasana was confirmed by the introduction of the method of teaching discipline to Ven. From then onwards, Parivenika education gradually evolved for the betterment of the threefold Sasana of Pariyatti, Patipatti and Pativeda. Modern Pirivena education is also evolving towards an environmental and social discharge centered on spiritual perfection. Present day Pirivena education has been prepared in accordance with the Pirivena Education Act No. 64 of 1979. The spiritual and external development of all four groups of monks, nuns and nuns is expected through the education of Pirivenas and Buddhist monks. There is an urgent need to focus on the use of current methods to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the teaching and learning process in the Pirivena system. It is a pleasure to create a new website within the Pirivena Education Branch of the State Ministry of Dhamma Schools, Pirivenas and Bhikku Education to meet that need. This gives the Pirivena teacher-student community the opportunity to fulfill their service and educational needs. Knowledge is stored in today's modern world. The Internet is one of the most important tools for finding that knowledge. Pirivena education is also in line with modern technology and this website has been created for the Pirivena system. I hope that this website will be of great help to the Working Pirivena Theras, the heads of the Seela Matha Institute, the Pirivena teachers and the lay students to work towards achieving the goals of the Pirivena.
